Marche boasts many charming and noteworthy cities. We have selected a few that we think you should take the time to visit.

Ancona is best known as an ancient port city. Founded by the Greeks in 387 BC, it offers a wealth of history. The city was once a Roman colony and later invaded by Goths, Lombards, and Saracens. Highlights include several churches, a beautiful cathedral, and museums. Ancona has its own airport.

Recanati is a cozy, historic little town beautifully situated atop a hill. The view over the landscape is breathtaking. The town was historically important, especially during the 18th and 19th centuries, and is the birthplace of the famous poet Giacomo Leopardi. There are various shops, bars, and restaurants, and the area offers numerous excursion opportunities.

The small pilgrimage town of Loreto is known for the historic Basilica della Santa Casa and the "Holy House" inside the Basilica. Thousands of pilgrims journey annually to this remarkable building, said to have originated from Nazareth. In addition to the fantastic buildings and art present in the town, it also offers an outstanding view over the Adriatic Sea.

Macerata is one of the region's most historically vibrant cities, with Piazza della Libertà at its heart.

Ascoli Piceno is a city surrounded by two rivers and located atop a plateau. If you are interested in history, churches, and museums, this is the place for you. Head to the beautiful square Piazza del Popolo and sit down at one of the cafes.
