Located along the banks of the Neckar River, Heidelberg is one of Germany's most beautiful cities. For centuries, it was a center of political power and boasted a vibrant and influential cultural life. In 1386, Germany's first university was established here by Elector Ruprecht I. The construction of the Heidelberg Castle also began during his reign and continued until the mid-1600s.
However, in the late 1600s, French invasions completely destroyed medieval Heidelberg, including the castle. The city was partially rebuilt in the early 1700s in a Baroque style.
