Baden-Württemberg is a federal state in southwestern Germany, established in 1952 through the merger of Südbaden, Württemberg-Baden, and Württemberg-Hohenzollern. It borders Switzerland to the south and France to the west. Within Germany, it shares borders with the other German states of Rhineland-Palatinate to the northwest, Hesse to the north, and Bavaria to the east. The Danube River has its source in Baden-Württemberg, and the state's rivers include the Neckar and Main, tributaries of the Rhine. Lake Constance, located at the border with Switzerland, is one of Central Europe's largest lakes. The Black Forest is a forested mountain range in the state. The highest peak is Feldberg at 1,493 meters above sea level. The state capital is Stuttgart, and other larger cities include Baden-Baden, Freiburg, Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, and Ulm.
