Trips to Wismar
Wismar is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful towns in Mecklenburg, with its city center recently designated as a World Heritage site. During the Middle Ages, it was an important center for the Hanseatic League, as evidenced by the monumental brick church that seems disproportionate compared to the town's other buildings.
In the heart of the city, there is a large market square featuring a pavilion in Dutch Renaissance style from 1602 at its center. Until 1897, water was led here from a source located four kilometers away to supply 220 private and 16 public houses with water.
The most beautiful house on the square is Alter Schwede (the Old Swede), built around 1380, with a protruding Gothic brick gable.
Georgenkirche and Marienkirche serve as somber examples of neglect of the town's historical heritage. Extensive damage from World War II is only now being addressed.
